What Is an HSG Test?

When you start looking into fertility care, you may come across a test called a hysterosalpingogram, or HSG. Understanding what an HSG test is can bring a sense of direction to a process that often feels full of unknowns. This diagnostic test helps evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes, offering a clearer view of what may be influencing conception.

At the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (CARS), you’re welcomed by specialists who blend advanced medical training with thoughtful, attentive care. The goal is simple: to make sure you feel supported, informed, and guided as you move toward the next steps in your fertility journey.

What Is an HSG Test

You can think of an HSG test as a kind of roadmap—one that helps your physician understand how everything is moving inside. An HSG is an X-ray dye procedure that allows the uterus and fallopian tubes to be clearly visualized. During the test, a small amount of contrast dye flows into the uterus while X-ray images capture how the dye travels.

Why Would I Get an HSG Test?

Open fallopian tubes allow an egg and sperm to meet and then continue toward the uterus. When a blockage is present, it may play a role in fertility challenges. The HSG procedure, or hysterosalpingography procedure, gives your physician important insight into how your reproductive system is functioning.

Here’s what the test may reveal should there be a potential issue:

  • Blocked tubes
  • Uterine fibroids or polyps
  • Tubal procedure outcomes

This is why an HSG test often becomes a key part of the broader fertility evaluation process.

What to Expect During the HSG Procedure

Timing plays a meaningful role. The best time to schedule an HSG test is usually during the first half of the menstrual cycle—after your period but before ovulation—to ensure accuracy and safety.

Here’s what typically happens during the procedure:

  1. You’ll be positioned similarly to a routine pelvic exam.
  2. A thin catheter is placed so contrast dye can gently enter the uterus.
  3. X-ray images are taken while the dye moves through the fallopian tubes.

The procedure itself is brief—often completed within minutes. Some individuals describe cramping sensations similar to period discomfort. These sensations usually ease soon after, and your physician may recommend simple strategies to help you stay comfortable. If you anticipate emotional or physical discomfort during a pelvic exam, taking Tylenol before or after the procedure can help manage symptoms.

What to Know Before an HSG Test

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), blocked fallopian tubes are one of the most common causes of infertility,* making this test an important part of fertility assessment. The benefits of an HSG are clear: it provides valuable information that helps fertility specialists tailor treatment plans thoughtfully and precisely.

An HSG test is one part of a larger picture. Having it performed and interpreted by experienced professionals matters. Our Connecticut fertility center is staffed by board-certified reproductive endocrinologists, skilled nurses, and highly trained embryologists who bring extensive expertise to every evaluation.

FAQs

Is it safe to get pregnant right after an HSG test?

Yes. It is typically considered safe to try to conceive within a few days after the test. Your physician may offer personalized recommendations based on your results.

How long does an HSG test take?

While preparation may take a bit of time, the procedure itself usually lasts about 15 to 30 minutes.

What happens if the HSG test shows blocked tubes?

If a blockage appears on your HSG results, your physician will discuss next steps. These may include additional diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive procedures, or fertility treatments that bypass the fallopian tubes, such as IVF.
